November 6, 2020811 is the national call before you dig phone number. When you call this number it protects you, as well as your community. Any kind of digging that you plan to do requires you to contact the 811 centers.
Simple projects such as planting a garden, installing a fence or mailbox even require you to contact 811. Hitting a line can knock out service to your home and neighborhood or result in fines, damage and serious injury.
When you call 811, you will be connected to a representative from your state’s 811 center that will ask you simple questions. These questions are ones such as the location and details of the project you are doing. You can also get online and make this request as well. Before you get off of the phone you will get a ticket number for your project. The utility companies have a few days to respond to your request. They will send out someone to mark the approximate location of the buried utilities with paint or flags so that you can avoid them. Remember that ticket number you received? You can use this to determine that all of the proper spots have been marked.
When you start digging make sure to dig around the marks and not on them. One thing to know as well is that there is no charge for this service. Happy Digging!
